What is Group Therapy?
Just as individual therapy serves to help you overcome emotional obstacles and gain self-awareness, group psychotherapy can also provide valuable support in these areas. Group therapy entails a therapist working with a small collective of individuals simultaneously. This approach is particularly effective for those seeking to harness the collective insights of others to facilitate positive changes in their lives. Some therapy groups are specifically tailored to unite individuals who have encountered similar challenges, such as chronic anxiety, substance misuse, or coping with complex grief, such as the loss of a loved one to suicide.
In contrast, other therapy groups may adopt a more general approach, concentrating on assisting a diverse group of individuals in addressing emotional issues, enhancing self-esteem, bolstering self-confidence, and so forth. Finding oneself among individuals with whom a sense of connection can be established can be a significant source of support. Moreover, participating in group therapy often proves to be less intimidating than people might initially expect!
Types of Group Therapy
Clinicians Bereaved by Suicide Group
The emotional impact of losing a patient, colleague, or loved one to suicide can be profoundly isolating, especially for clinicians. As healers, we often carry the silent burden of grief, guilt, and unanswered questions. Yet, where do we go to process these complex emotions?
Alongside a highly experienced colleague as co-facilitator, through the course of 2025 I shall be offering a safe and supportive therapy group for clinicians bereaved by suicide. This group will run as a Balint group, providing a reflective space to explore the emotional and relational impact of your loss.
Balint groups provide a structured, reflective space for clinicians to explore the emotional and relational aspects of their work, making them particularly suited to helping professional’s process the unique challenges of bereavement by suicide.
For clinicians bereaved by suicide, the relational depth, emotional safety, and reflective focus of a Balint group offer a unique, powerful space for healing. By exploring the emotional nuances of their experience, participants can process grief, reduce guilt, and move toward professional renewal.
The group will:
- Provide a compassionate space to share your experience without judgment.
- Explore the relational dynamics and emotional weight of grief.
- Help make sense of difficult emotions like guilt, shame, anger, and sadness.
- Support your journey toward emotional healing and professional resilience.
In a profession where we often hold space for others, this group invites you to be held — to sit with others who understand and to process your experience in a meaningful way.
Sessions begin in 2025. Limited spaces will be available.

TA Group Therapy
In Transactional Analysis Group Therapy, you have the opportunity to gain insights into your behaviour and thought patterns by exploring your individual life scripts, ego states, and transactions.
This process allows you to better comprehend yourself in the context of others, as it offers chances to delve into both individual and group dynamics, ultimately aiding in a deeper understanding of oneself in relation to other people.

Benefits of Group Therapy
-
Supportive community
Join a non-judgemental group of like-minded individuals, fostering a sense of belonging and trust. Hearing that someone else has a similar experience or has been thinking the same gives us a sense of normalisation that we are not the only ones going through something.
-
Increased self-awareness
TA helps you recognise and change unproductive patterns of thinking, feeling or behaving. This leads to greater self-understanding and emotional intelligence. In listening to other people we also have the opportunity to appreciate our own process a bit quicker than we might in individual therapy. Seeing how other people tackle certain things supports us to understand more about how we do things.
-
Effective communication
Improve your communication skills, creating healthier relationships and resolving conflicts with ease.
-
Personal Growth
Achieve profound personal growth by gaining insights into your past and empowering your future.
-
Cost-effective
If individual therapy is not possible, group therapy is more affordable.
What to Expect
The group consists of 4 – 8 people. We would meet at the same time and day each week for 2 hours. This may be for a specific number of weeks or it may be an open-ended opportunity. The group is closed meaning that no new members may join after the start of one course. 2 weeks’ notice is required to leave the group to allow for any existing issues to be processed and to have a sufficient goodbye.
The group is a non-judgemental and confidential space meaning that group members do not refer to anything from within the group or consult with fellow group participants, outside of the therapy sessions. Safety and boundaries will be addressed at the start of each group forming and there will be a group agreement and contract to guide work together.
